SUMMARY:Safeguarding Our Seas: Lessons from Lundy

DESCRIPTION:\NLundy Island provides very important habitats for birds and a wide variety of marine animals. It is part of the Marine Protected Area that has been in place since 1972. The film looks at the success of the No Take Zone that has been in place on the east side of the island since 2003. The No Take Zone is the first legally enforced no fishing area in UK waters.\NJoin us to watch this 30 minute film and learn how this zone has impacted the flora and fauna of this special place. We will be joined by Robert Irving for a Q and A session after the film.\NRobert runs his own marine environmental consultancy called Sea-Scope which undertaken projects both in the UK and overseas. He first became involved with Lundy when he was appointed the Nature Conservancy Council's Marine Liaison Officer for the island back in 1983. That was at a time when the waters around the island were being considered as a statutory Marine Nature Reserve, the first in the country. He was based on the island for two summers and spoke with fishermen, divers, yachtspeople, visitors and others to explain what the changes would be in becoming a statutory, as opposed to a voluntary, Marine Nature Reserve would entail. He has since gone on to undertake numerous underwater surveys around the island, in particular monitoring the small population of Mediterranean sunset cup corals present off the north-east coast.\NRobert coordinated the Marine Festival held at the island in 2022, which celebrated 50 years since the voluntary marine nature reserve was established in 1972. It was his idea, as part of the Festival, to make a film about the effectiveness of the No Take Zone off the island's east coast.\NRobert has acted as the Secretary to the Lundy MNR Advisory Group since 1990 and also sits on the island's Management Forum. He co-wrote a book with Dr Keith Hiscock in 2012 about the history of the island's marine conservation.\NBooking is required for this event as spaces are limited. £4 per person. Book here.
